SANTO DOMINGO.– La acupuntura es promovida en distintos centros de medicina tradicional china como una alternativa complementaria para tratar el colesterol alto, mediante la estimulación de puntos específicos del cuerpo vinculados al sistema digestivo y energético. Sin embargo, más allá de la tradición milenaria, ¿qué dice la ciencia moderna sobre su efectividad?

¿Existe evidencia científica sobre la acupuntura y el colesterol?

Diversos estudios clínicos han analizado el impacto de la acupuntura en los niveles de colesterol total, LDL (colesterol “malo”) y triglicéridos. Algunas investigaciones preliminares sugieren que podría generar reducciones modestas en ciertos parámetros lipídicos, especialmente cuando se combina con cambios en el estilo de vida.

No obstante, organizaciones científicas como la Organización Mundial de la Salud han reconocido la acupuntura como terapia complementaria para diversas afecciones, pero no la establecen como tratamiento principal para la dislipidemia (alteraciones del colesterol).

Por su parte, la American Heart Association señala que el manejo del colesterol debe basarse en evidencia sólida que incluya alimentación saludable, ejercicio regular y, cuando sea necesario, medicamentos como las estatinas, cuyo beneficio en la reducción del riesgo cardiovascular ha sido ampliamente demostrado.

Lo que advierten los expertos

Cardiólogos y endocrinólogos coinciden en que, aunque la acupuntura puede ayudar a reducir el estrés y mejorar la percepción de bienestar —factores que indirectamente influyen en la salud metabólica—, no reemplaza el tratamiento médico convencional.

“El colesterol alto es un factor de riesgo silencioso que puede derivar en infartos o accidentes cerebrovasculares. No debe tratarse únicamente con terapias alternativas”, advierten especialistas en salud cardiovascular.

Los expertos recomiendan que cualquier persona interesada en integrar la acupuntura como apoyo consulte primero con su médico, mantenga controles periódicos de laboratorio y no suspenda medicamentos sin supervisión profesional.

En conclusión, la medicina tradicional china aporta una visión energética y holística del organismo, pero la ciencia moderna aún considera que la acupuntura puede ser un complemento, no una solución única, en el tratamiento del colesterol alto.
