REDACCION INTERNACIONAL.- Treinta y cinco años después de ser diagnosticado con la enfermedad de Parkinson, el actor Michael J. Fox asegura que la actuación no solo le permitió continuar con su carrera, sino que también transformó su vida.
A sus 65 años, el protagonista de Volver al futuro prepara su regreso a la televisión y continúa impulsando una de las iniciativas más importantes del mundo para la investigación de esta enfermedad.
En una entrevista con The Hollywood Reporter, Fox recordó que, tras recibir el diagnóstico en 1991, los médicos le advirtieron que probablemente solo podría seguir actuando durante diez años.
Sin embargo, superó ampliamente ese pronóstico y ahora se alista para participar en la cuarta temporada de «Shrinking», la serie de Apple TV+, 25 años después del plazo que le habían estimado.
“La actuación prolongó mi vida y la ha hecho interesante de una manera que no creía posible”, afirmó el actor.
De actor a referente mundial contra el Parkinson
En el año 2000, Fox decidió convertir su experiencia personal en una causa global al crear la Michael J. Fox Foundation (MJFF) junto con Deborah W. Brooks.
Desde entonces, la organización ha destinado más de 3,000 millones de dólares a investigaciones para desarrollar nuevos tratamientos y avanzar hacia una cura para el Parkinson.
Actualmente, la fundación respalda alrededor de 180 programas de desarrollo de medicamentos que se encuentran en fase de ensayos clínicos, una cifra muy superior a la que existía cuando comenzó su labor hace más de dos décadas.
Además, la organización prevé cerrar 2026 con 700 millones de dólares en nuevos compromisos de financiación, consolidándose como uno de los principales impulsores de la investigación sobre esta enfermedad.
Romper el silencio
Fox mantuvo su diagnóstico en privado durante siete años antes de hacerlo público. Cuando decidió compartirlo, asumió un papel activo en la visibilización del Parkinson y en la defensa de quienes viven con esta condición.
El actor explicó que dejó de preocuparse por ocultar los síntomas y optó por mostrarse tal como era.
“No tengo que ocultar esto. Al diablo con la vanidad”, recordó sobre la decisión que cambió su relación con la enfermedad.
Su testimonio, tanto en medios de comunicación como ante el Senado de Estados Unidos, ayudó a dar mayor visibilidad a una comunidad que durante años permaneció poco representada.
Un regreso a la actuación
A pesar de las dificultades provocadas por el Parkinson, Michael J. Fox nunca abandonó por completo su carrera artística. Tras protagonizar éxitos como Family Ties y Spin City, también participó en series como Boston Legal, Rescue Me y The Good Wife.
Su incorporación a «Shrinking» representa su regreso a la actuación después de una pausa de seis años, motivada por los problemas del habla derivados de la enfermedad.
En la serie comparte escenas con Harrison Ford, quien interpreta a un médico con Parkinson. Fox elogió el compromiso del actor con el personaje y destacó la calidez con la que fue recibido en el set.
Actualmente, su interpretación en la producción le ha valido una nominación a los premios Emmy.
La esperanza puesta en la ciencia
Además de financiar ensayos clínicos, la fundación de Fox ha impulsado investigaciones sobre biomarcadores que podrían permitir detectar el Parkinson antes de la aparición de los síntomas y proyectos relacionados con el uso de células madre.
La organización también ha promovido una mayor participación de los pacientes en la investigación médica, con el objetivo de acelerar el desarrollo de nuevos tratamientos.
Para Michael J. Fox, la lucha contra el Parkinson continúa tanto frente a las cámaras como en el ámbito científico, convencido de que la investigación y la visibilidad pueden cambiar el futuro de millones de personas que conviven con esta enfermedad.
